A common problem our existing clients face is editing Frame 5.5 documents in Frame 6. When upgrading a document to Frame 6 there are a few book-numbering issues worth discussion.

Frame 6 handles book numbering quite differently from previous versions. Fortunately, the file and page numbering properties have been centralized and are now all handled from within a single dialog within the book file. This means that you can effectively ignore numbering issues until most of the editing of your project is done. With a little practice, book numbering should only take a few minutes to straighten out. Keep in mind that when modifying book numbering, the file(s) in question must be highlighted in the book file. To access the numbering properties, you may either right-click (Command-click on a Mac) on the file or go to Format > Document > Numbering.

The easiest way I've found to handle book numbering is to start with the first file in the book, get it perfect, then proceed in order through the remainder of the book. By working in this order, you can set the numbering for your initial files, then see what it does to your subsequent files. Frame 6 makes this easier because it now shows you the page numbering range for a file highlighted inside the book file.

After you straighten the numbering on your TOC and any other generated lists, through the first main chapter of your book, you may be able to number multiple chapters in one step. Multiple chapters may be selected by either shift-clicking or Control (Command) clicking. Control (Command) clicking is helpful if your chapters are not in sequential order within the book.

Here are some common settings for numbering the different files in a typical book:

TOC:

Chapter Numbering:

  • Chapter #: 1
  • Format: Numeric (14)

  • First Page #: 1
  • Format: roman (xiv)
